We're at home in the Cotswolds

We decided to skip our planned Battle of Hastings and leave stormy East England. Too old and wise to put up with war in the wind and rain! So we travelled across England on the M25 and various other motorways and are now in the Cotswolds! We’ve booked three nights in Burford and four nights at Manor House Farm outside Chipping Campden. This takes us past the very busy bank holiday weekend when accommodation was looking dicey. We’ll use these two spots as home base for travel in the area.

Burford is located at the entrance to the Cotswolds - prosperous wool country in medieval times.  The introduction of cotton and the industrial revolution changed everything and the towns became frozen in time. Harsh for the people then - wonderful for us now - charm oozes out of every high street and lane way.
The High Street of market towns are extra wide to allow for herds of sheep to be brought into town to be sold. But there must be more cars than there were sheep - parking is very tricky.

Huge churches were built with money donated by the wealthy people who prospered in the wool trade. This one was started in the 1100's, finished in the 1400's. The grave stones have been eaten away by lichen over the centuries. You can only read recent ones - from the 1800's!

  1. I love that the roads are wide because of the sheep. Those roads hardly look English because of their width!
    Love to you both xoxo
